Mario Merida

Foreign Legal Consultant

Mario Mérida is a Guatemalan lawyer with more than five years of experience in international arbitration, public international law, and human rights litigation. Prior to joining Clark Hill, Mario served as Head of the International Affairs Division of the Office of the Solicitor General of Guatemala, where he was responsible for managing the State’s defense strategy in seven investment arbitration and annulment proceedings before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), as well as two recognition and enforcement proceedings before U.S. courts.

He has also led the State’s defense before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Committee and the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as well as represented Guatemala before the UNCITRAL Working Group III, the UN Human Rights Council, and the Working Group on International Arbitration of the Latin American Association of State Solicitors (ALAP). In addition, Mario successfully led Guatemala to the first victory in its history before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and led the State’s efforts to end an international investment dispute of more than twelve years in less than four months.

Currently, Mario participates in international commercial and investment arbitrations before the International Chamber of Commerce, ICSID and the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce. He is also a delegate of ICC Guatemala before the ICC Arbitration & ADR Commission.
